Deciding To Move To Beacon
Honestly, I never thought I would ever leave The Bronx. My family moved to The Bronx when I was five years old. My mom and dad had lived in Brooklyn forever! The were able to get an apartment from the MBD apartment lottery in the first wave of fixing up the Burning Bronx. Being five years ago, it wasn't a big change. It was a big change for my parents because they finally got their own room. In Brooklyn we live on the top room of a building that were filled with our own family. We lived right above my grandparents and uncle. It was a railroad apartment, where everything was in one line. The new apartment in The Bronx was a castle compared to that apartment.
I have been known to move from place to place to place in The Bronx. However, my last 12 years in The Bronx I lived on the same block on Belmont Ave. Two different apartments but still the same block. Growing up in The Bronx and not learning to drive until I was 37, I knew all the ins and outs of this borough. I could never see myself living any place else. And then... a separation happens and covid after that. I was two to three month to being unable to pay rent.
When the separation happen I started dating a sweet sweet man. He was in the same boat as me, with having a reduction in income due to covid. The plus side was he had an huge home that he could share with me and my children and we can be safe from the covid that was taking everyone down. After many many MANY conversations, we decide that it was financially the right thing to do and move in together. Please note I said financially. When come back to that with another blog.
So four years ago, we sent sail to Beacon. It was so tough adjusting to living on the side of mountain when you lived in the hood all your life. Eventually, the kids and I adjusted. My two oldest moved with me and my oldest's life was very much so still in The Bronx so she stood behind. But she did spent alot of time with us.
Moving to Beacon opens a lot of doors for education for my teenagers. It also gave the safe spaces they needed to deal with their special needs. I never have to worry if something is going to go wrong when they are waiting for the bus to pick them up for school. I never have to worry about someone being mean for no reason. This town is a very loving town. There aren't that many folks that live here so you recognize folks very quickly when you see them over and over.
I can't see myself living with my kids in The Bronx again. There's so much freedom here for them and peace of mind for me.
